PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN Trailer Traces the Origins of Wonder Woman

Thanks to the undeniable success of the Wonder Woman live-action movie, it’s safe to say that DC’s iconic character has been firmly reestablished as the most popular superheroine in the world. But while casual fans are now familiar with version of Diana’s comic book origin, the story behind her creation is a far more fascinating tale.

Later this year, Professor Marston & The Wonder Women will explore the life of Dr. William Moulton Marston, a psychologist, the inventor of the lie detector, and the co-creator of Wonder Woman. And like his creation, Marston had a secret identity of his own. He wrote the Wonder Woman comics under the pseudonym Charles Moulton, in part to hide his greatest secret.

In the 1940s, Marston and his wife, Elizabeth, defied convention by taking on a young woman named Olive Byrne as their mutual lover. Both Elizabeth and Olive played major roles in shaping Wonder Woman’s character, but the secret of their relationship threatened to destroy their lives and reputations.

In the newly released trailer, Marston (Luke Evans) is grilled by a committee over the subversive and sexual nature of his Wonder Woman comics, while Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) and Olive (Bella Heathcote) appear to be far more in love with each other than either of them are with Marston. There’s also a scene of a comic book burning, which was not uncommon for the time. Marston and his lovers had very good reasons to hide their true desires and relationships, as they simply weren’t accepted back then.

Annapurna Pictures has also released a comic book style image of Marston, Elizabeth, and Olive, which recreates one of the key moments from the trailer.
