PRODIGY Is Mark Millar’s Newest Creation for Netflix

A little over a year ago, prolific comic book writer Mark Millar, the man who gave us Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Wanted, sold his company Millarworld to Netflix, with the promise that the streaming giant would produce television series and movies based on his work. Since then, his comics Jupiter’s Legacy, American Jesus, Huck, and Empress have all been announced as coming to the platform. But Netflix continues to publish new Millarworld comics as well, with the intentions of turning them into live-action projects down the road. The latest comic, as announced via The Hollywood Reporter, is called Prodigy, and will be illustrated by American Vampire artist Rafael Albuquerque.

Prodigy will revolve around Edison Crane, the world’s smartest man who wants more than just being a billionaire business tycoon. According to the comic’s official description, “His brilliant mind needs constant challenge and so he’s become the go-to guy for governments around the world when a problem arises they just can’t handle. A Nobel-Prize winning scientist, a genius composer, an Olympic-level athlete and an expert in the occult, Edison Crane is as addicted to the mysteries of the world as he is to sitting at the top of the Fortune 500. These are the tales of the world’s most exceptional man and this story marks his first published adventure.”

Millar boasts that Edison Crane is the best character he has created thus far, and in a career filled with memorable characters, that’s saying quite a lot. In his Tweet announcing the project, Millar described Prodigy as “your new fave thing!! This is the best character I’ve ever created and I CANNOT WAIT for you to see it this December!!” The ever-enthusiastic Millar’s work tends to be very visceral, very high concept, and usually very violent and R-rated, and this one seems to be no different in that regard, judging from the early artwork. It’s more fitting that his latest creation (and all of them really) should find a home on Netflix, where Millar will have far less restrictions placed on him than in the world of tentpole filmmaking, which increasingly leans towards everything being PG-13.

The first issue of Prodigy will hit comic book store shelves and be available and online on Dec. 5, 2018. Below you can check out the variant cover for the series’ first issue, from artist Ozgur Yildirim.

Are you looking forward to Mark Millar’s latest creation? And do you think he can match past glories such as Kick-Ass and Kingsman? Be sure to let us know your thoughts down below in the comments.
