Princess Leia Gets Her Own Political Attack Ad

Because it’s a Presidential election year, we can expect a lot of political attack ads between now and November. And even the Star Wars universe isn’t immune to that!

Lucasfilm’s The Star Wars Show has posted its own attack ad aimed one of the franchise’s most beloved characters: Princess Leia Organa. The video ties into the recently released novel Star Wars: Bloodline by Claudia Gray. During the course of that story, Leia attempts to run for First Senator of the New Republic and she faces a backlash courtesy of her political enemies.

Like any good political attack, the ad mixes a hint of truth with a total distortion of the facts. For example, Leia isn’t a real Princess of Alderaan by blood, but her Naboo royal heritage makes that line of attack suspect. Similarly, Leia is smeared as being against small business because she murdered an “entrepreneur” like Jabba the Hutt. Context is everything, but we’re surprised that they didn’t call Jabba a “job creator.”

In one of the video’s most hilarious moments, Leia is called out for not giving Chewbacca a medal at the end of A New Hope, and it also gives Leia a hard time for marrying Han Solo, a known criminal. Can’t argue with that one, although you’d think that playing a major role in winning the freedom of the galaxy would give Han and Leia some good will. This clip uses several tropes of real attack ads, including the x-ray view of Leia set to ominous music. It’s definitely over-the-top, but it is quite funny!
