Prince’s PURPLE RAIN Blazer Is Going to Auction

Purple Rain—both the film and its soundtrack—has given the world much to celebrate since its release in 1984: that indelible title track, the equally memorable, “When Doves Cry,” and, of course, the badass leather-sleeved blazer that Prince wears on-screen while motorcycling with co-star Apollonia Kotero. As Associated Press reports, said blazer is now going to auction.

“It’s definitely the most important piece of screen-worn Prince clothing that’s ever come up for auction,” said Joe Maddalena, president of the California-based auction house, Profiles in History. “This is a signature piece of wardrobe worn from an iconic movie in his most famous role.”

Prince is infamous (and revered) for his battle for complete artistic control, and his hard-fought achievements paved the way for artists’ rights. His wariness of the industry, though, made him watchful of all of his art and art-related ephemera.

“Prince memorabilia in general, it just really doesn’t exist. It seems like he controlled it all,” said Maddalena. “This is the first time ever for something like this, and it might be the only time because the rest of the costumes may be in his [personal] wardrobe.”

The seller of the blazer said that her sister, a makeup artist, worked with Prince in Purple Rain. Maddalena expects the jacket to fetch much more than the asking price, which sits between $6,000 and $8,000.

On June 29, Prince’s blazer will be auctioned alongside costumes from Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Alicia Keys, as well as a crystal-studded glove from Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous tour. Maddalena, unsurprisingly, says the Prince blazer is the “star of the show.”
