Prince Officially Gets His Own Shade of Purple

What sort of legacy do you hope to leave behind? And more importantly, what’s the color scheme of that legacy? For Prince, the so-called Purple One, the answer to the latter question is obvious—and it’s something the Pantone Color Institute and the Prince Estate made a reality with the creation of Love Symbol #2, a rich shade of purple that was rolled out earlier this week.

The color purple has been connected to the musical icon since the release of Purple Rain in 1984. Now, a year after his passing, Pantone developed the new color as a tribute to Prince, matching the hue of the custom-created Yamaha piano he was scheduled to take on his 2016 tour. According to Pantone Color Institute VP Laurie Pressman, Love Symbol #2 is “emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style…[and] enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”

This isn’t Pantone’s first brush with documenting an iconic color in pop culture. They had a hand in developing such recognizable shades as Tiffany’s Blue and, more recently, Minion Yellow. But they haven’t been in the game of memorial colors before this, and with good reason—it’s rare for a cultural figure to be so associated with a single shade, and it feels appropriate for Prince to be the first to receive this honor.

The Prince Estate will be providing guidance to brands as they incorporate Love Symbol #2 into products. For now, though, we can gaze upon the glory of the color and rewatch Purple Rain for the umpteenth time.
