Prince Announces Two New Albums For Late September

A new Prince album is always a cause for celebration. But two new Prince albums? Release on the same day? Not even really sure how to process that information. It sort of feels like a national holiday.

That’s the good word from the Purple One, who plans to release Plectrumelectrum and Art Official Age on September 30 through Warner Bros. The pair of albums offers two distinct looks for the musician, who’s going it alone with one, and bringing along friends for the other.

Art Official Age will be the first solo effort from Prince in 4 years, and it’s being described as “a classic Prince album,” which hopefully means lots of silky, sexy guitar riffs and the occasional slow jam.

Then there is his all-female band 3RDEYEGIRL’s new album, the funk-infused Plectrumelectrum, which will be out the same day. That group sees Prince joined by drummer Hannah Ford, bassist Ida Nielsen, and guitarist Donna Grantis. According to The Fader, Prince has been previewing songs from Plectrumelectrum during his U.K. “Hit and Run” tour earlier this year.

However, it is Prince’s return to Warner Bros. that feels like the real story here: the artist was at the label for years before creative disagreements and contract disputes saw him severing all ties with the label and changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol (“The Artist Formerly Known as Prince” years). Then again, nothing is forever with Prince, who spent the better part of the last decade fighting against the digital distribution of his music.

Both Plectrumelectrum and Art Official Age are available now for digital pre-order. Get ready by jamming out to our recent Car Tunes and Cartoons mix, which featured some classic prince jams.
