Next month, the zombie apocalypse is starting a few centuries early in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the mash-up adaptation of Jane Austenâs classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Seth Grahame-Smithâs 2009 novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, brought the undead into Austenâs narrative and itâs quite a different world than the one that she originally envisioned!
Pride and Prejudice is widely considered to be one of the all-time great novels, thanks in part to Austenâs depiction of the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. But the inherent dangers of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies mean that thereâs nothing conventional about the current telling of the tale. And both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have the more pressing concern of surviving.
Sony Screen Gems has released two new preview scenes from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies that introduce the two leading characters. In the first clip, posted above, Elizabeth (Lily James) is confronted by Lady Catherine de Bourgh, as portrayed by Game of Thrones star Lena Headey. Lady Catherine is displeased by rumors of Elizabethâs interest in Mr. Darcy, and her attempt to force Elizabeth out of the picture are worthy of Cersei Lannister herself. However, Elizabeth is a very formidable warrior, as Wilhelm (Ryan Oliva) quickly discovers.
The second preview scene puts the focus on Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley), as he demonstrates that carrion flies have a very useful purpose in this new world. And much like Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy isnât afraid to get his hands dirty when thereâs a zombie to be dealt with.
Headyâs former Game of Thrones co-star Charles Dance is also in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as Mr. Bennet, the father of Elizabeth and her four asskicking sisters: Kitty (Suki Waterhouse), Jane (Bella Heathcote), Lydia (Ellie Bamber), and Mary (Millie Brady). Matt Smith (Doctor Who) co-stars in the movie as Mr. Collins, with Douglas Booth as Mr. Bingley, Emma Greenwell as Caroline Bingley, Dolly Wells as Mrs. Featherstone, and Tom Lorcan as Lieutenant Denny.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies will be released on February 5.
