After months and months of build up, Marvel’s Secret Wars is nearly upon us, and the whole thing is turning out to be so ginormous that it’s going to need another companion series to truly explore all the goings on in Marvel’s latest (and perhaps biggest?) event series ever.
In case you’ve been living under a rock these past few months, in Marvel’s new version of Secret Wars, the many worlds and timelines (not to mention major stories from years past) of the Marvel Universe will be thrown onto one new planet called Battleworld. And the series that will premiere as a companion to the main Secret Wars story is, appropriately enough, going to be called Secret Wars: Battleworld.
So what will Secret Wars: Battleworld #1 be giving us that’s not in the main title, or any of the other spin-off books? According to the official synopses, there are two stories occurring in this first issue that should blow Marvel fans’ socks off. The first follows Doctor Strange as he possesses the Punisher, becoming the “Sorcerer Extreme” with only the early ’90s era replacement Fantastic Four, consisting of Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Hulk and Ghost Rider, stepping up to take him down. (And yes, once upon a time, Marvel decided that quartet of heroes should be the FF.) In the other story, we find out what happens when M.O.D.O.K. recruits every other M.O.D.O.K. ever from across Battleworld for his latest evil scheme. Here’s a hint from Marvel: it results in a ” F.I.G.H.T.!”
Secret Wars: Battleworld #1 goes on sale May 20, 2015, and is written by Josh Williamson & Ed Brisson, with art by Mike Henderson and Scott Hepburn. The standard cover is by Paco Medina, with variants from James Stokoe and John Tyler Christopher. Check out our preview gallery below:
