“That ’90s Show,” the 2008 episode of The Simpsons that retconned the hell out of Marge and Homer’s relationship history, has long been one of the most contentious episode for die-hard fans of the beloved show, but it is hard to be mad about the grunge-inspired music that it produced. Overtly referencing the look and sound of Nirvana, Homer forms the band Sadgasm and writes the track “Margerine” to try and win his blue-haired soul mate back after she goes off to college and falls in love with her professor.

For his contribution to the forthcoming Faux Real II (the second installment of Father/Daughter Records’ extremely cool series in which musicians cover a bunch of songs created for TV and film), Small Wonder covered Homer’s ballad to win Marge back and totally nailed it. Though the New York-based musician takes some liberties, adding some atmospheric keys and melodica, and whisper-singing the lyrics, Small Wonder perfectly captures the lovelorn state poor Homer was in when he wrote this exceptionally heartbreaking track for his future wife. The lyrics start out comical and campy, but then take a serious and poetic turn. Listen below.
