Premiere: Mega Ran’s ‘Infinite Lives’ is a Philosophical Ode to Classic Video Games

With “Infinite Lives” Mega Ran has used a philosophical cheat code to elucidate the meaning of life and art. Like a chiptune ode to Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 18”, “Infinite Lives”, from Ran’s forthcoming RNDM LP, is a frank song about the eternal longevity of artistic expression. Peep the video below.

The track begins with a sung refrain from D&D Sluggers, after which Ran launches with a thematic bar: “Heard you only live once, but I’ma disagree.” As Ran goes on to explain the significance of creating something that you are proud of so that it may represent you when you are gone, he takes 16-bit form along with Sluggers as they enter 3D versions of Mega Man 2, Super Mario World, and Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Though they continue to die over and over in the reimagined 16-bit worlds, Ran doesn’t seem all that stressed.

Given that Ran strayed a bit from the chiptune tip with recent releases, it is nice to hear him flow so naturally in his element once again. After hearing this, I’m looking forward to seeing what else is in store on this new record, which drops September 15. For a taste of what to expect, Ran is going on a little mini tour of the Pacific Northwest, before going on a larger one. You can check those dates out below.
