Premiere: James Supercave’s Video for ‘Better Strange’ is a Found Film Gem

James Supercave has what appears to be an excellent album on the way with Better Strange, which doesn’t yet have a release date and is the group’s first LP. The band debuted the title track recently, and today, Nerdist is happy to premiere the video for “Better Strange”, which the band described as “like 90s cartoons did the same drugs that our music is hooked on. Beautiful, bizarre, hilarious.” Check it out below

Collaborator Max Bellucci mashed up the song with visuals from the award-winning 2014 short film Half Wet by Sophie Koko Gate, which as the band pointed out above, is very much cut from the same cloth as the song, a psychedelic pop tune with high pitched and enchanting vocals reminiscent of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s Alec Ounsworth.

Bellucci said of the video, “When I first watched the short film Half Wet by the UK-based animator Sophie Koko Gate, I immediately thought of the James Supercave song ‘Better Strange’ and started to build a storyline in my mind that expressed what the song means to me. I see ‘Better Strange’ as a really powerful song that tells the listener they don’t have to be perfect, self-conscious, or contrived, because they are intoxicating when they open up and let the world see their flaws and eccentricities.”

The band explained that the song is about letting go and being completely genuine: “It’s about a girl who floored me. I caught her in that moment of wild where she was completely uninhibited and real. The song is a plea to stay in that moment–you’re better when you’re yourself. Your weird, broken, beautiful self.”
