Out of context, the phrase “It came to me” runs the risk of sounding pretentious in a weirdly messianic way–like someone who might be trying to sell you on the plus sides of joining a clearly-terrifying cult. But when delivered by the Portland-based duo, The Domestics, it sounds demurely charming, like you might actually learn something important too.

Michael Finn and Leo London have been writing songs together since the pair met in a recording studio in Portland in 2013, and though they recorded their first album in spring of 2014, they sound like they have been writing partners for a decade. Listening to the poppy simplicity of “It Came To Me”, you can easily glean the authenticity of the group’s emotional earnestness. And if that isn’t enough to sell you, then wait for the chorus when resounding piano chords give way to a crunchy guitar riff that leaps electrically up the fretboard.

After listening to “It Came To Me” this track for the first time, I felt like sense of discovery had transferred osmotically into my own brain, like I was onto something good as well. Hope you feel the same way after tuning in.
