Premiere: ‘Heart On Wave’ By Slime Girls Is A Sunny Chiptune Gem

Ah, the warm nostalgic embrace of chiptune. What ineluctably comes to mind is a world that is boiled down to a linear progression of platforms in which all problems are resolved by getting from Point A to Point B by running and jumping. Because the objective seems so simple, the music that soundtracks all the side-scrolling action is responsible for a a large portion of the its emotional gravity. Fittingly, Slime Girls about section begins with the phrase, “There is substance in 2D.”

Madison Taylor’s Slime Girls project explores the sentimental capacities of manipulated 8-bit music by adding layers to the mix that aren’t necessarily instinctive–take Slime Girls’ 2012 Vacation Wasteland EP which added electric guitar to the mix. In the artist’s new single “Heart On Wave,” from the forthcoming EP of the same name (out December 9 via ZOOM LENS), Slime Girls basks in the gold of morning sunlight, adding a four-on-the-floor beat and the brightest synth arrangement you’ve heard since the winter solstice. In my head, I picture this track as the soundtrack to Sonic in the honeymoon stage of a budding relationship with a lady hedgehog. Is that weird? Oh well.

Check out “Heart On Wave” below and let us know how badly it makes you want to play Sega.
