Premiere: Coheed and Cambria Have Rad Times in Their Video for ‘You Got Spirit, Kid’

Progressive rock group Coheed and Cambria has, to date, released seven albums, and every one of them takes place in a universe called Heaven’s Fence. Also, for the comic nerds among us, there’s a series of comic books called The Amory Wars, written by Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez, that is set in a universe that consists of 78 planets held together by a series of energy beams called the Keywork. Yes, we’re totally on board, too.

The band’s adherence to writing their music within their created universe has resulted in some terrific albums and songs, most notably “Welcome Home”, which dominated late 2005 and is one of the most fun tracks in the original Rock Band game.

However, for their upcoming eighth album–The Color Before the Sun, which comes out on October 16 via 300 Entertainment–the band decided to leave Heaven’s Fence, and based on their new video for lead single “You Got Spirit, Kid”, they are exploring an entirely different world: high school. Check out the DJay Brawner-directed clip above, but be careful if you’re sensitive to bare butts and foul language.

It’s a classic teenage tale: boy gets clothes stolen by lacrosse team, boy and his posse get their revenge by welding the door to their locker room shut, boy and his posse perform a concert in the school gym. Yup, this video has all the timeless teen movie archetypes, and because of that, it is beautiful. The song itself is top notch and features much of what has made Coheed and Cambria a force for the last two decades: technical yet accessible prog-rock guitar work, Sanchez’ idiosyncratic high-pitched vocals, and a melodic and memorable chorus—a melodic and memorable everything, really.

Let us know in the comments if you think Sanchez is believable as a high school student, and check out the band’s upcoming tour dates below.
