Video Premiere: AM & Shawn Lee’s ‘Nightshine’ Is a Funky Trip

The conceit of AM & Shawn Lee’s new album Outlines (out now) is really beautiful. The album, which offers simmering, low-key electronic and acoustic funk is about modern day communication breakdown. With all the ways we have invented to connect with one another, the band worries about the profusion of artifice and wonders about the impact of what we are actually saying and what it really means.

The music video for their track “Nightshade” addresses this concern in multicolor. Over consumerism-wary lyrics (“you want want you see at the front of the line / It doesn’t matter”), a visual collage that feels like an interactive Pop Art installation shows footage that likely came from some fair-use video stockpile. Images of people shopping, skateboarding, coal mining, and other weirdly disparate activities meld into a surrealist post-apocalyptic world. It is super heady–which is why I feel so weird wanting to dance along to it–but maybe sometimes the best communication is the nonverbal kind. E.g. cue this up at your next party and watch the groove take hold.

Let us know if you If you dig! If so, I recommend diving into the duo’s SoundCloud page.
