Two weeks ago, Marvel revealed that Powers Boothe was joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a recurring role as Gideon Malick. And apparently, Boothe will be making his first appearance in next Tuesdayâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode!
But first some background on the preview clip shown above. Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) has been putting Hydra back together and he was making a lot of progress until Hunter (Nick Blood) and May (Ming-Na Wen) had him cornered. Hunter ignored Wardâs threat against Mayâs ex-husband, Andrew (Blair Underwood), so Werner von Strucker (Spencer Treat Clark) apparently killed Andrew alongside a few additional Hydra agents.
Or did he? In the preview scene, Ward notes that Werner is missing shortly before he is finally placed in contact with Malick. Itâs not clear if Boothe is playing the same character he portrayed in The Avengers, but it would make sense if he was. Malick could be both a high ranking Hydra official and a member of the World Security Council that used to control S.H.I.E.L.D. before the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Judging by the body language of Wardâs right-hand man, Kebo (Daz Crawford), Malick inspires a lot of fear among the Hydra faithful…but not in Ward, who insists that heâs playing a different game than Malick. Will this lead to a Hydra civil war or a reunified Hydra that is fully under Wardâs control?
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues this Tuesday, November 3 on ABC.
