Powers Boothe Joins Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. in Recurring Role

In Marvel’s The Avengers, Powers Boothe’s face was hidden by shadows as a member of the World Security Council, but his voice was unmistakable. Now, Boothe is set to make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a recurring role on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Boothe will be portraying Gideon Malick, “a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery.” It’s not clear if Boothe’s new character will be the same role he played in The Avengers. However, Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb dropped a hint that Gideon will be dealing with Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent turned Hydra leader.

“Gideon is incredibly menacing and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear,” said Loeb. “Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed.”

Boothe is no stranger to the comic book world, having lent his voice to Gorilla Grodd and Red Tornado in the Justice League Unlimited animated series and Lex Luthor in the Superman: Brainiac Attacks animated movie (in addition to co-starring in both Sin City movies as the corrupt Senator Roark). In 1980, Boothe won an Emmy Award for his leading role as Jim Jones in Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, and he has appeared in numerous film and TV projects including Deadwood, Tombstone, and 24. More recently, Boothe recurred on ABC’s Nashville.

Boothe will make his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debut later this season.
