POWERPUFF GIRLS Gets Renewed for a Second Season

After far too long away from our TV screens, The Powerpuff Girls came back with a bang on Cartoon Network earlier this year. A new generation of young viewers have now embraced Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom, and no doubt several fans of the classic series returned to watch as well.

Now we’ve learned the good news—thanks to Entertainment Weekly—that Cartoon Network has officially announced that those stalwart protectors of Townsville are returning for a second season. This news comes right on the heels of the show’s recently won Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program.

In a statement, Cartoon Network CCO Rob Sorcher said, “The Powerpuff Girls is on a momentous run with its first Emmy nod, a debut appearance at one of the biggest fan events of the year, and now a second season greenlight. Congratulations to the Cartoon Network creative teams who have super-powered this property with the perfect amount of Chemical X to bring a hit show for a new generation of fans.”

The original series ran on Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2005, and helped re-brand the channel from being the home of old Hanna-Barnera cartoon re-runs, into the premiere place for new, original animated content, along with shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo.

And for you Powerpuff Girls fans out there that happen to be in San Diego for Comic-Con this week, you’re in luck: the new Powerpuff Girls series will have their first-ever panel at the convention, and also an immersive Townsville-inspired area, plus an an avatar-maker photo booth!
