Postmodern Jukebox Takes a Classic Weezer Tune Back in Time

Last month, Weezer’s blue album, and the accompanying hit number “Say It Ain’t So,” turned a whopping 23 years old. I’m feeling more than a bit old but I’ll do my best to make it though this post without sounding like an old man. BUT IN MY DAY, we didn’t have all these fancy YouToobs, Splotterflies, and streamy music… not to mention this Postmodern Juicebox! Possibly in some plot to make me feel even older, the folks at PMJ went and recorded an old-timey lounge version of the classic Weezer track.

Postmodern Jukebox have a knack for finding the right genre for their covers, and this time around is no exception. Enlisting the impressive vocal stylings of Los Angeles-based singer Dani Armstrong, they take the 1994 alt rock song and transform it into a classic torch song sort of style. As Armstrong belts out the lyrics, it’s hard not to imagine the song would have been perfectly at home in jazz clubs and speakeasies decades ago. I find myself saying this for almost every Postmodern Jukebox song we cover, but there’s certainly something to be said about songwriting that’s so amenable to the transcendence of genre.

And maybe it’s just the original video’s garage band style, but side by side, it almost seems like the original version by Weezer is the cover in this case.

What’s your favorite PMJ song? Did I lose all credibility for that last part about Weezer’s version sounding like a cover? Well, the joke’s on you–I still unabashedly love ska music and therefore never had any credibility! Let’s discuss how great PMJ, Weezer, and ska music are in the comments below!
