Okay, quick recap! Postmodern Jukebox does old-timey covers of modern songs. We, and most of the planet, love their old-timey covers of modern songs. We’ve featured them before in many different articles and believe with all our hearts that they are just fantastic and we never want them to stop doing the wonderful things they do.
In their latest, Scott Bradlee and his merry musicians give us a 1920s big band rendition of 1999’s seminal “Thong Song” by rapper and silver-hair aficionado Sisqó. As we’ve mentioned before, despite the topics of the songs themselves, it’s a sign of good song writing when a tune can work in different styles. PMJ powers through the ’90s pop hit in a style that brings to mind performances of Louis Prima. Come to think of it, considering the King of the Swing might be most well known for his version of “Just a Gigolo”, the genre choice for the cover of “Thong Song” is pretty much perfect.
Accompanied by two be-thonged (totally a word) dancing gals is singer and former American Idol season six runner-up Blake Lewis. As Lewis belts out the various confusing analogies of Sisqó’s lyrics, the dancers provide the visual aid.
