POKEMON RED, BLUE and YELLOW are Coming to the Nintendo 3DS

Remember the simpler days, when trainers didn’t obsess about obsessively breeding the same Pokémon over and over until it natures, EVs and other nuanced statistics? Before Pokémon Contests gave each moves a coolness and cuteness value? When there were no running shoes and only one type of bicycle, which cost 1,000,000 Pokémon dollars?

If you no longer have an original Game Boy handy (or even a Game Boy Advance), those days have returned: in last night’s Nintendo Direct, it was announced that the original Pokémon games–Red, Blue and Yellow–will be re-released on the 3DS Virtual Console on February 27, 2016.

This is not a remake: it appears to be a straight port of the original games, with one notable exception: the ability to trade Pokémon with other players wirelessly. Good-bye link cable! But aside from that, will the Virtual Console versions really by 100 percent faithful to the original Game Boy cartridge release? Nintendo says so on the Pokémon website: “The games remain true to the originals–complete with monochromatic pixel art and 4-bit background music–so you can feel as though you’re experiencing these games just as they were back then!”

That may be true for intended in-game content, but what about the many glitches that became as big a part of the original Pokémon experience as actually playing the game the way you were meant to? Will we be able to use the Mew glitch to catch the otherwise unobtainable legendary? Will we be able to Surf the coast of Cinnabar Island and encounter MissigNo.? Will the hidden Professor Oak trainer battle be possible?

We’re hoping so: the kids really need to experience the joy of playing a classic game that is, in places, wonderfully broken.
