POKÉMON GO Could Be Made Hands-Free with Smart Glasses in the Near Future

Pokémon Go is forcing an entire generation of kids (and adults) to do something we had phased out of human society: walk around. That’s burden enough, so the least we could ask for is to not have to use our hands while we’re out mining Pidgeys for experience points. Simone Giertz, a.k.a. the Queen of Crappy Robots, came up with a hands-free way to play the game, and while it makes for an entertaining video, we just can’t see ourselves applying this method to our everyday lives.

Recon, whose Jet smart glasses have been on the market since last year, is working on a solution, and Engadget’s Nicole Lee got to try it out first hand. The company ported Pokémon Go to their Android-based smart glasses, and while the prototype seems rough in spots, it also shows tremendous potential.

The port had to be oriented horizontally to accommodate the device’s 428 x 240 display resolution, the app is buggy and crash-y, and it needs WiFi access to work, but there are also plenty of high points that prove Pokémon Go could function on this form, especially considering that this version is an unofficial port. Throwing Pokéballs sounds intuitive, which is done by swiping on the right temple area of the glasses, and the screen exists in the user’s peripheral vision, so you can still function as a human in the world while hatching those eggs.

A Recon spokesperson told Engadget, “With further optimization, Pokémon Go on Recon Jet could very well be brought to market in the future.” In the meantime, read Engadget’s hands-on account here, and let us know if you’d get a pair of smart glasses just for Pokémon Go; we’re considering it.
