PlayStation’s VR Unit Will Be Available in October for $399

It’s official, the PlayStation VR will be available for purchase this October for $399. That’s $200 cheaper than the Oculus Rift, and a whopping $400 less than the HTC Vive. The announcement came during today’s PS VR conference at GDC, in which Sony‘s Andrew House revealed all of the headset’s specs. The final build will include nine LED lights for 360 tracking by the PS camera. Sony also touted that it was designed with comfort in mind, which is important for daily use. As was previously mentioned, it’s also designed to work with both the PlayStation Move motion-controls and the DualShock 4.

There are currently over 230 developers working on PS VR content, and 50 virtual reality games will be playable by the end of the year, according to Sony. Everyone who purchases the headset will get The PlayRoom VR, which seems to be a collection of social games. There’s also a Star Wars: Battlefront experience incoming to the new gear. We’ll receive more information on that in the coming months.

Finally, there will be be a cinematic mode where you can play flatscreen games and watch movies.

Alright, let’s try and take all of this information in. $399 is definitely a competitive price. You can get a PS4 and the headset for about $750, which is not too bad when you consider the entry price for the Rift and Vive. And that’s not even taking into account that you’ll need a PC rig powerful enough to run VR games. 36 million people already own the hardware required play games on the PlayStation VR. All Sony needs to do now is prove that games on the new tech are actually fun.

Will you guys be purchasing the PS VR? Is this the sweet spot you guys were hoping for? Let us know in the comments below!
