PlayStation Previews Upcoming PS4 System Software Update

Well lookie here, avid PlayStation 4 users: the PlayStation Blog just shed light on a host of new features and tweaks to expect when the PS4’s 2.0 software update hits. Codenamed “Masamune,” the 2.0 update had already been boasting pretty cool features such as themes, Share Play and Youtube support. What PlayStation has unveiled today is sure to be twice as satisfying since it’s a lot more of what PS4 users have been adamantly demanding. Among the announces additions to the 2.0 update were:

USB Music Player: Allows users to play music in the background while gaming via USB storage.

Change colors: Allows users to change the color of their home screen’s background.

Players You May Know: Aggregates players in the “What’s New” section based on who friends play with.

Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Live with PlayStation app will allow users to feature and filter other broadcast, as well as archive their own.

Content Area and Library: Provides easier way for users to locate previously used apps and games.

Enhanced Voice Commands: Improved voice recognition using PS4 Camera/ Microphone and new commands such as “Start Broadcast,” “End Broadcast,” and “Find Face.”

Add To Library: Players no longer required to download games directly from the PlayStation Store and can add them into their library for easier access in the future.

Back Up Data: PS4 Data can be backed up via USB storage, including  save data, video clips, screenshots, settings, download data, and more.

Now you’re talking, Sony! PS4 users will definitely get most of what they’ve been asking for, though the omission of DLNA servers is sure to make a few folks turn up their noses. But fret not: according to Sony Director of Product Planning & Software Innovation Scott McCarthy, DLNA servers are still on the way, and this is still not a complete list of the features coming to Masamuna. He also had this to say when asked about the release date of 2.0:

Hmmm, that’s quite the dodgy answer. Hopefully he means that we’ll be seeing the update sometime this holiday season, but with him phrasing it as “some of the biggest games of the year” as opposed to “biggest games this year,” we could definitely be waiting well into 2015 for the update. You’ve been warned: keep your expectations at bay.

So what do you think? Is this 2.0 update shaping up to be what you had hoped for for the next progression of the PS4 UI? Share your thoughts with us down in the comments below.
