Remember when the first teaser for the movie Cloverfield came out and a certain segment of fandom swore up and down it was going to be a secret Voltron movie? All because they misheard the dialogue as saying, “It’s a lion! It’s huge!”?
Well, allow us to say this, and to mean it: It’s a lion, it’s huge, and it’s coming from Playmates. The Netflix revival, Voltron: Legendary Defender, is getting the toy line it deserves, with options that vary depending on what kind of Voltron you like best.
If you prefer the giant robot when he’s broken down into his robotic lion components, or if you want your awesomeness in a more manageable size, you’ll want the basic figure assortment, which comes at $9.99 each. Featuring all five lions, a miniature combined Voltron, and Robeast villain Myzax. Each 5.5-inch figure features either clawing action, projectile launching, or detailed weapons and accessories.
If you want to be able to combine your lions and take them apart at will, the Legendary Lion assortment is for you. Featuring the four-limb lions at $17.99 and a deluxe electronic Black Lion for $29.99, these all have 18+ points of articulation, removable speeders with pilots, projectiles, combining weapons, and, in the case of the Black Lion, over 50 sounds–some of which only unlock when you combine all five to form a 16-inch-tall Voltron.
On the other hand, if you don’t care as much about the lions and would just prefer a super posable robot, the Ultimate Voltron includes lights, sounds, projectiles, and 26Â points of articulation. He stands 14″ tall and will run you about $39.99.
(Needless to say, a lot of you will want them all. And that’s okay.)
More into role-play? Kids can don Defender Gear, complete with masks and weapons to disguise them as either Voltron or the Red Lion. If they need to level up, Voltron’s Electronic Transforming Sword is also available, shapeshifting from cutlass to saber and packed with 15 sounds, many of which are motion-activated.
Welcome back to our toy box, Voltron. It’s been way too long since the last company tried, and even that was only by mail order. The robotic pride of lions about to overrun mass retail will be exceeded only by our pride in finally getting to own them. Keep your eye on store shelves beginning January 2017.
