Nintendo was very transparent about the development of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, so much so that they revealed a bunch of the game’s inspirations, early ideas, and concept art in a series of documentary videos. The most interesting bits of information included in these videos was footage of the game’s 2D prototype, which looked a lot like a NES version of the game. It looks like we’ll never get to play that awesome-looking game, but we can check out something very similar to it. One fan known as Micropig Gaming has re-created the prototype and has released it, as Zelda: Breath of the NES (via Kotaku).

Version 2 of the game was just released a couple days ago, and it looks super impressive. It captures the spirit of the Switch title by including a lot of what makes it great, like interactive objects and environments. In the trailer above, you can see Link chop down a tree onto an octorok, and later cut a tree and roll in into an enemy to hurt it that way. It looks like there’s also plenty of exploration, along with a day/night cycle, a lot of the major items from the original, and other features that provide a smooth gameplay experience.

This iteration of the game is only a demo at this point, but it’s still playable for fans who want to check it out. It’s only a 2MB download for Windows users, so grab it here if you’re so inclined. For those of you who decide to give it a go, let us know on Twitter how cool it is.
