Over the next few years, Pixar is strengthening its hold in the sequel business: Cars 3 comes out in June 2017, and after that, we’re getting The Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4. Still, they’re making room to launch an original story. In November 2017, the thus far mysterious Coco will hit theaters. Finally, Pixar has shared some details about the movie.
We already knew that the film, helmed by Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson, as well as co-director Adrian Molina, takes place in Mexico during Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Now we’ve learned (via EW) that the voice cast will be led by Gael GarcÃa Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle, Casa de Mi Padre), Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order, Doctor Strange), and newcomer Anthony Gonzalez as the film’s protagonist, the 12-year-old Miguel. The only other confirmed cast member is Renée Victor (Weeds), who plays Miguelâs grandmother Abuelita.
Worth noting is the fact that the cast is so far all Latino, staying true to the film’s setting. “It was important to us from day one that we had an all-Latino cast,” Unkrich said. “It focused us, and we ended up with a fantastic mix of people â some from Mexico and some from Los Angeles.”
As for the plot, it focuses on Miguel’s struggles to embrace his own musical ambitions while living in a household of music-hating shoemakers (a stark contrast to the rest of the lively musical town). In pursuit of his goal, Miguel finds himself thrust accidentally into the Land of the Dead, and from there, adventure is sure to ensue.
Coco is still 11 months away, so in the meantime, read more about the film here.
