Well, that was quick. Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed to Eurogamer that Pikmin 4 is “very close to completion.” That’d make two titles featuring the little critters for the tablet-based home console.
“It’s actually very close to completion,” said Miyamoto during the interview. He continued stating, “Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.” The Big N wouldn’t admit that it was coming soon, but they did have the following to say, “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.” This comes as a complete surprise since the title hadn’t even been officially announced. Let alone, that it was coming soon.
Strangely, no platform has been confirmed, so even though soon implies it will be on the Wii U, there’s a chance that it could become a launch title for the mysterious NX. Maybe it could even take The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess route, making an appearance on both consoles. It’d be an instant killer app for their next console, considering the critical success of Pikmin 3. I’m all for having it on the Wii U, simply because the gamepad’s map feature was extremely useful for crafting killer strategies.
Let’s remember that Nintendo is always on their own timeline. Almost ready could mean a couple of months, or a couple of years. The Big N is in a state of flux, so nothing they do would surprise me at this point. This is a company that has frequently adapted to different times, and has been extremely successful when they have their backs against the wall.
Would you want this to be an NX title? Was the franchise better suited for the second-screen experience? What do you even want out of the next installment? Let us know in the comments section below. I for one am extremely stoked for the next installment in this series, because these games are gems.
