Pickstarter: The Gentleman (or Lady)’s Single-Use Monocle

Sometimes you have to give people credit for creativity and presentation. A new Kickstarter campaign launched recently that is about as silly as things can get, but we know you’re going to want to pledge simply for that reason alone. Artist and writer Zach Weinersmith of the webcomic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal has decided to bring a little ribaldry to the stuffy upper-crust with his new product, the Gentleman’s Single-Use Un-Lubricated Monocle. It’s a monocle that is presented for all the world like a thing people use for a “Night on the Town.” And even the campaign video is fun and on-point. Behold!

What a delightfully genius idea! Make sure you’re always prepared to go to the opera with a little eyepiece in your back pocket. You should always have a monocle on hand just in case; better have it and not need it than need it and not have it, and with the chances of going to the opera with an attractive person always a distinct possibility, you can’t bank on them being the one to bring ocular protection.

There are two things about this that I find particularly entertaining. First, that people think this is an actual condom enough to where Mr. Weinersmith had to add this addendum: “Just to be absolutely clear, because people have asked: It is not a condom. It is made of hard plastic and metal. If you attempt to use it as a condom, you will definitely hurt yourself, and you may experience the miracle of life.”

Second, that the campaign was launched on March 15th (which was yesterday as of this writing) and it’s already more than met its goal of $25,000. The pledge levels only get you various-sized packs of single-use monocles and the only stretch goal, at $45,000, is an exclusive Ryan North comic. So, really, you’re just helping them make and sell the thing you’re buying.

This could be, and is, the novelty gift of the year, decade, and possibly century, so if you’d like to partake, you can do so in the link right here. And do always keep your eye and honor protected at all times.
