Pickstarter: THE BABADOOK Pop Up Book

Here at Nerdist, we love The Babadook, the feature film directorial debut of Jennifer Kent. The Babadook is the inde Aussie horror flick that was the hit out of Sundance tarring Essie Davis as a mother at the end of her rope who must protect her son from the terrifying Mister Babadook while struggling to maintain her own sanity.

Mister Babadook appears through a mysterious children’s book read to troubled child Samuel and now, if the book manages 2,000 pre-orders in the next sixty days, you will be able to take the Mister Babadook pop-up book home and keep it on your shelf for a rainy, scary, shadowy day.

The book will be published by Insight Editions and unlike your typical crowdfunding campaign, all you need to do is pre-order a copy of the book and with the holidays coming up, that shouldn’t be too hard. The campaign will require a minimum of 2,000 pre-orders over the next sixty days for the book to come to life. The book was developed with writer/director Jennifer Kent and the same artist who created the book featured in the film will be creating the book that will be sent to you, as well.

Recently we spoke with Kent about her film (interview coming soon!) and she had this to say about the pop-up book project:

“It’s funny because I’m such a purist in terms of the film and everything and people were joking saying, ‘Oh, we should have Nike trainers with Babadook on them,’ and they’re really trying to tease me because they know how much I hate merchandising but with the book I feel very differently because I’ve written — and all the illustrations from the book [in the movie] are in there — but I’ve written a bit more of a story so it’s a stand alone book. Something to compliment the film so I’m really happy about that.”

Visit Mister Babadook’s official website for more details on the book, pricing, delivery and more. Don’t miss The Babadook, the feature film on which the book is based, landing stateside on November 28, 2014.
