Pickstarter: Take an Animated Tour Through History With EXTRA HISTORY

I’m a history buff so this is kind of right up my alley: the team behind Extra Credits just launched a Patreon campaign for their new animated web series, Extra History.

Extra History would present bite-sized chunks of history in fast-paced, animated videos as a ten-week miniseries. The best part? Each video would be freely available to any and everyone via YouTube.

Apparently it takes quite a bit of time (and money) to create animated videos based on history, and creators Daniel Floyd and James Portnow need a little help getting the new free series up and running. Describing Extra Credits as “one of the most expensive and time-consuming things [they] ever made,” Portnow and Floyd would like to scale back some of the risk for their next project – hence the Patreon.

For those of you not quite familiar with Patreon, it’s like an ongoing Kickstarter to support the works of some of your favorite creators. Comics artists like Gordon McAlpin (Multiplex) or critics and journalists like Mattie Brice use the platform to basically monetize works that have big audiences, but are hard to otherwise support with traditional revenue models like ads and such.

According to the Extra Credits creators, their series has racked up something like 200,000 users since its debut, and they’re hoping that a few of you out there might want to help keep their latest venture going. They’re offering supporters a chance to choose which historical period gets animated next and, with enough monthly backers, Portnow and Floyd would be able to take the leap and make Extra History videos full-time.

Here’s a sample of one of their videos:
