Pickstarter: Our Favorite Crowdfunded Projects 4/29

Welcome to the first edition of Nerdist’s weekly round up of cool projects looking for funding through the likes of Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Pledge Music and more. Nerdist loves to see people create, innovate and succeed, and in that spirit we’re going to pick projects that are unique, look fun and are trying new things.

Pick #1 – Grimm Fairy Tales Animated Series from Zenescope and Titmouse’s Jon Schnepp

We love Jon Schnepp around these parts. The brilliant mind behind Metalacolypse is teaming with Zenescope to bring their Grimm Fairy Tales books to life in animated form. While there is a plethora of fairy tale properties being brought to life on screen lately, none are doing it in such a fun, sexy and exciting way. Did we mention our fearless leader is involved? In addition to Lena Headey and other talented actors providing voices for the cast, our own Chris Hardwick will be providing a voice on the series. Check out our full interview with Jon and Zenescope’s Ben Jackendoff for more details on the series.

Pick #2 – Hot Problems

This week saw Hot Problems song “Party With My Friends” get some virality from a Star Wars lip-synch music video. Many days later, their catchy tracks are still in our heads, and we would love to hear a full album from these guys.

Pick #3 – The Beast of Wolfe’s Bay

When a perpetual grad-student is called in to help investigate mysterious attacks thanks to his expertise in paleoanthropology, he gets more than he bargained for when he’s teamed with a no-nonsense sheriff and his brilliant daughter. We’re on board with this modern retelling of Beowulf from Erik Evensen (Gods of Asgard) and you can count on the book to have a high body count and lots of nerd references.

Pick #4 – Damsels and Dragons

From the folks that brought you Awkward Embraces and Dragon Age: Redemption comes a web series about LARPing from a female perspective. Produced by and starring America Young and Jessica Mills, the show will follow a group of live action role playing enthusiasts as they face down their nemeses, the Bone Shards.

If you or someone you know has a project you’d like us to talk about, email the relevant information to [email protected].

  1. I’m so delighted to see The Beast of Wolfe’s Bay on this list! Erik introduced his project on the Node. It looked very cool.

    Kudos!!! W00t!

  2. Nathaniel H. says:

That’s really cool that you mention Hot Problems… I’ve been listening to them non-stop for about half a week! My favorite track of theirs so far is actually “People Say I’m the Man,” a party track produced with just the right amount of irony and dancy fun to make it awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRELn2MbVkY&feature=channel&list=UL .

It should also be noted that Hot Problems’ back story needs to be read by all. They’re from the future and need us all to generate partyfundance to save the future!

Also, that Star Wars sing-along video has given me the most appreciation for all six movies as a whole I’ve ever felt. Ususally I’m your typical OT nerd guy, but something about those clips with the music… so cool.

  3. Christopher Baker says:

Not really a “new or innovative thing”, but the people behind the web series ‘Fallout: Nuka Break’ are trying to do a second season.
