In the ‘90s, Midway Games became one of the most popular gaming companies in the world with a number of blockbuster arcade games including Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Terminator 2, NFL Blitz, Smash TV, Narc, and WWF Wrestlemania. But by 2009, Midway was gone and its assets were sold off.

Former Midway employee Joshua Tsui is spearheading Insert Coin, a new documentary that focuses on the glory days of Midway’s arcade dominance in the ‘90s. Tsui has already filmed interviews with several of the Midway icons, including John Tobias, Eugene Jarvis, Mark Turmell, Sal Divita, Kerri Hoskins Branson, George Petro.

Clips of those interviews can be seen in the Kickstarter campaign video created for Insert Coin, which recalls their experiences during Midway’s meteoric rise and the video even teases the times that Aerosmith and a few WWF Superstars came into the studio for Revolution-X and WWF Wrestlemania, respectively!

“I started my video game development career at Midway in the early ’90s and it really set the tone for the next 20+ years of my professional life,” wrote Tsui on the Insert Coin Kickstarter page. “This was an amazing time to be in video games and Midway was making history one game at a time.”

“Insert Coin talks to the developers of each game and lays out how all the games were made and how they connected with each other,” continued Tsui. “Every game had its own unique story about victories, setbacks, and general mayhem. Only someone from the inside can understand the context of events and ask the right questions.”

Tsui is seeking $75,000 to complete Insert Coin, and as of press time, the Kickstarter is closing in on $20,000. In return for backing Insert Coin, Tsui is offering donor several reward tiers including digital downloads of the documentary, a special edition Blu-ray with bonus footage, special thanks in the credits, T-shirts, and even executive producer credits for anyone who wants to make a particularly large donation.
