Pickstarter: Help Yasumi Matsuno Make Another FINAL FANTASY TACTICS

While the shiny graphics of next-gen games and the alluringly low, wallet-smashing prices of Steam sales are tempting, sometimes it’s difficult to avoid the siren call of a game that you know and love. There are certain titles in my gaming library that I’ll dust off every now and then for a couple of hours, but there are other titles that, once I pop them in, I am in it for the long haul. Case in point: Final Fantasy Tactics, which I’m about 99.9% certain is my favorite game of all time. A robust character advancement system combined with a memorable (and memorably mistranslated) story and highly addictive gameplay make it not only one of the best tactical RPGs I’ve ever played, but one of the best games period. So, naturally, you can imagine my excitement when I heard that Tactics director Yasumi Matsuno was looking to make a spiritual successor to the 1997 classic.

Matsuno is widely regarded as one of the masters of the RPG genre, having worked on titles like Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy XII and more. Teaming up with Carlsbad, CA-based Playdek, Matsuno-san and company are looking to raise $600,000 to finance the production of Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, a tactical RPG for iOS, Android, PC, and OSX. Turn-based combat? Check. Class-based character progression? Check. Complex storyline involving kingdoms at war? Check. Based on the project’s video and its lengthy description, Unsung Story seems like exactly what the doctor ordered for turn-based tactical RPG-starved fans like myself.

It’s important to note that production will continue on the project regardless of whether funding is met. The Kickstarter is meant to secure additional funding to bring in more developers and to help bring the game to platforms that Playdek’s fans have requested. According to the stretch goals section, if they raise upwards of $2.8 million, they’ll be able to bring the title to PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS, too, but the priority is iOS and Android. The concept art and the creative team behind Unsung Story both look extremely promising, but only time will tell whether it’s the heir to the tactical throne or just another usurper.
