DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. have been using Indiegogo to raise money for its We Can Be Heroes campaign to raise money to fight hunger in Africa, partnered with Save the Children, the International Rescue Committee, and Mercy Corps. The latest pitch is a “Superman Edition” offering that is just over halfway to its $100,000 goal with 15 days left, and some of the perks they’re offering might be of interest to you.
The most unusual perk remaining is gonna cost you but good: for $25,000, Jim Lee himself will come to your hometown and paint a mural on a wall just for you. They’ll throw in a T-shirt, hat, and lithograph, too, but, imagine, you’d have a renowned comic artist painting a wall in your town and it’d be your doing. If you have 25 grand to donate, that is. (My hometown will have to look to someone else. I don’t have 25K to spare.) You’ve missed out on getting yourself drawn into an actual issue of Action Comics for $5,000 — all three of those sold out — but there are four more $1,000 Superman Dream Bedrooms available, in which your kids (or, if you’re a grown kid, you) can end up with a whole bedding set, recliner, bean bag, ottoman, and other stuff in the Superman mode. There are Infinite Crisis VIP packs, signed and numbered artwork from the cover of Superman: Earth One, Volume 1, autographed by Shane Davis and J. Michael Stracynski, Jim Lee lithographs, and more. ($45 gets you an exclusive T-shirt, $10 gets you five digital downloads, and so on.)
So, this is kind of a different thing for the crowdfunding category, something purely to raise money for a charitable cause. You get stuff for your donation, but it’s about doing good, too.
