Imagine if the world’s greatest superhero was famous both for the purity of his heart and his equally impressive mustache. That hypothetical hero is Captain Ultimate, and he’s the subject of today’s Pickstarter column!
This Kickstarter project to comes to us from Ben Bailey, a member of the Nerdist family of writers, and the man behind our weekly Pull List column. He’s also a comic creator on the side, and Captain Ultimate is his passion project with co-creators Joey Esposito and Boy Akkerman. Together, they’ve made six issues of Captain Ultimate which have been digitally published under the Monkeybrain Comics imprint. Now they’re looking for your help to bring Captain Ultimate to print!
As noted by the creators, Captain Ultimate is a kid friendly book, but it is not just for kids. Instead, they have created an all-ages title that comic fans of any age can enjoy. Perhaps you’ll get a better idea of the tone after reading this description:
“A long time ago, the world’s most renowned superhero disappeared and justice was handed over to the grim-n-gritty vigilantes that blurred the line between the righteous and the wicked. Everyone forgot what it truly meant to be a hero… until the day the Giant Robot Octopus Alien Monster attacked! When one little boy finds the courage to stand up to this alien invader, it just might be enough to inspire the return of the world’s greatest superhero.”
Unlike several comic book Kickstarters, the Captain Ultimate comics are already finished. It’s simply a matter of funding the project and sending the files over to the printer. This title also has some high profile fans in the comic book industry who are offering up their services for this project. Artists Chris Samnee, Ryan Stegman, and Sina Grace will each provide Captain Ultimate commissions to one lucky fan who selects their respective high-end pledge. There are also rewards that will give fans the chance to lend their likeness to an upcoming issue of the series!
At press time, the Captain Ultimate Kickstarter has just passed the $2,500 mark, but there’s still a ways to go before it hits the $15,000 goal. To learn more about the project, click here. It’s running until 8:00am PST on Sunday, June 19.
