Pickstarter: 20 Years of “Sick and Twisted” Cartoons

For two decades, Spike & Mike — Craig “Spike” Decker and Mike Gribble — have brought us the most deranged, horrifying, dark, and utterly wonderful animated shorts in the world with their renowned Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation. Starting as a spinoff to their original (or “classic”) animation festival, Sick & Twisted soon became the only game in town and showcased the best in all kinds of animation, but with an edge of depravity. So, basically, everything we could want!

Over the years, the festival has been home to the work of animators like Nick Park (Wallace & Gromit), Danny Antonucci (Ed, Edd n Eddy), Don Hertzfeldt (Rejected), Breehn Burns (Dr. Tran), Trey Parker & Matt Stone, and Mike Judge. To celebrate its 20 years of existence, the Sick & Twisted Animation Festival will have some of its more popular classic shorts as well as a whole crop of new ones destined to become classics themselves.

What they need is the Kickstarter public’s help to get everything up and going. This year’s festival will be held in La Jolla, CA, at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and will run from late August until early November 2013 with an opening gala that hopes to feature celebrity guests, balloons, food, and more. They’re very excited about the balloons and food.

They say they need about $15,000 to get the whole thing up and running, and as an incentive, they’re prepared to give away rewards like ticket packages to the show, VIP packages, DVDs, t-shirts featuring Spike & Mike artwork, tote bags or a mixture of any and all of the above. Don’t live in San Diego and can’t make it to the show? No problem! You can still have any number of the other prizes. All of the proceeds from this Kickstarter will go toward putting up the show and making and delivering all the prizes. That’s it.

If you want to help make 20 years of alternative animation excellence come to life, then consider donating to Spike & Mike’s Sick & Twisted Animation Festival campaign. They’re about a fifth of the way there already, but they need help to get all the way.

I’m going to recommend this blog!

The BEST Crew @ San Diego Comic Con every single year with their late night (used to be midnight until the fuck wads in charge changed it to 10pm) screening … who else besides ME remembers the debut of DR TRAN in 3-D ? I will admit some of the kickstarter offers are “meh”, but it is worth investing in making sure an independent Animation Festival continues …. the list of animated shorts debuting in the festivals before being picked up for a television series later is quite long !

Robin Williams said it best “Spike and Mike are like Disney – with Tits!”

OH! I remember going to these “Sick and Twisted” festivals at the Cleveland Cinematheque with my mother-in-law and sister-in-laws! Good times!
