Phil Lord & Chris Miller Developing THE FLASH Movie For Warner Brothers

It’s been rumored for awhile now that the duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, best known for The LEGO Movie and 21/22 Jump Street, were going to be developing some kind of superhero property for the big screen, and now we know that it’s going to be the movie version of The Flash for Warner Brothers. Right now, the two are just developing the story, with an eye to write the screenplay and then possibly direct, but all of that is up in the air right now. Actor Ezra Miller has already been cast as The Flash for the upcoming Justice League movie, and possibly appearing as early as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are maybe the perfect pair to take on this project, because these two are masters at taking ideas that are terrible on paper and turning them into gold; the idea of a movie about toys that have no narrative sounded awful to everyone when it was announced, and they turned The LEGO Movie into one of the best movies of 2014. Same goes for a movie based on a teen cop TV show from the ’80s that no one really cared about that much.

So why is a Flash movie such a bad idea? Because right now there is a great Flash TV show on the air, and I don’t know what a movie starring the character can offer moviegoers that the show isn’t doing already. Unlike Smallville or Gotham, CW’s The Flash isn’t a prequel show — it’s a straight-up superhero show that touches on all parts of the DC Comics mythology.

I totally understand why Warner Brothers isn’t using the Grant Gustin version of the Flash for the DC Cinematic Universe; as cool as it would be to see him up there with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, it would be really tough to explain why his buddies in the League never show up on his own show or ever help him out of a jam. Plus it limits the producers of the show into what storylines they can plan for the characters, as he has to revert to “status quo” every time a movie rolls around. But I’m still baffled by what a Flash movie can give audiences they’re not already getting for free. But if anyone can make it work, my money’s on Lord and Miller.
