People Keep Killing Themselves (Temporarily) in the FLATLINERS Sequel Trailer

Twenty-seven years after the original Flatliners came to theaters it turns out there’s still never a good day to die. Especially not when the afterlife follows you back to the real world, like it does in the new trailer for the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic film.

Ellen Page stars as Courtney Holmes, the ringleader of a new band of young doctors that begin experimenting with death in an attempt to see what happens when we pass on. Much like in the 1990 film, at first the experience is exhilarating, but when the visions and terrors of the afterlife start haunting them in the real world, blurring the wall between life and death, it becomes a nightmare.

While still feeling true to the original, this trailer shows the movie will stand on its own. The afterlife feels far more mystical, and Page’s Courtney is hiding a darker reason for engaging in the dangerous endeavor than simple thrill-seeking.

Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), the movie also stars Diego Luna (with a sweet mullet), Nina Dobrev, Kiersey Clemons, and James Norton. Not seen in this trailer is Kiefer Sutherland, who will reprise his role as Dr. Nelson Wright. Sutherland starred in the original film alongside Julia Roberts–if anyone knows the perils of toying with death, it’s him.

Whatever his role ends up being in the movie, as someone who loves the original, I am much more excited for this movie as a sequel than I would be if it was merely a reboot.

Flatliners comes to theaters this fall on September 29th.
