Peanuts in Coca Cola—Delicious or Disgusting?

I’ve heard of some pretty wild food combos like bologna cake and spaghetti burritos, but never before have I seen such an affront to taste and decency as peanuts in Coca Cola, which is apparently quite the popular Southern treat. According to research conducted by Rick McDaniel for the official Coca Cola website, the delicacy has been a Southern staple since as early as the 1920s. There are several theories as to why people started nutting their Cokes, with the prevailing thought being that it originated as a means of conveniently enjoying both snacks while driving or during a (literally) dirty job. But no matter the impetus, the peanuts in Coke concoction is real, and I am shooketh.

Although peanuts in Coke has been a Southern tradition for a while now, non-Southerners on Twitter—including myself—have only just now begu finding out about it. The reactions range from delight to disgust, with comedian Roy Wood Jr. of The Daily Show even going so far as to taste the abominable combination. Viewer discretion is advised.

For a more detailed take on the snack, the YouTube channel Emmy Made in Japan released just such a video in 2017:

Well, what do you think? Would you be willing to give peanuts in Coke a try? Or does that bologna cake sound pretty good right about now? Sound off in the comments below if you would put your nuts in a bottle of Coke.
