Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis Reunite for a New Movie

Daniel Day-Lewis is often called the greatest living actor in show business. There Will Be Blood is just as frequently noted as Day-Lewis’ strongest performance to date. Whether this adds up to oil baron Daniel Plainview being the greatest feat of film acting in recent history is up for debate, but no right minded cinephile will challenge the idea that Day-Lewis and filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson made veritable magic together back in 2007. And will again!

Nearly a decade after the release of their sinister collaboration, actor Day-Lewis and writer/director Anderson are reuniting for a second joint venture. Deadline reports that, following the past few months of rumblings on the matter, the yet-untitled film is officially a go at Focus Features.

Though we don’t yet have a name for the picture, we do know that it’ll take place in the high fashion world of 1950s America; this makes the project Anderson’s fourth period piece in a row—after There Will Be Blood (which took place across the first three decades of the 20th century), The Master (the 1950s), and Inherent Vice (a sprawling few days in 1970), and fifth overall, including the late ’70s-and-’80s-set Boogie Nights.

Excitement about any new Paul Thomas Anderson picture is to be expected, but the ante is upped significantly by the inclusion of Daniel Day-Lewis in the project. Whether this forthcoming collaboration, which is slated for release some time in 2017, could compare with There Will Be Blood is sure to earn skepticism from devotees of the ’07 film’s superlative status. But we’re all excited to see how close it comes.
