Nine years ago, Matt Damonâs Jason Bourne found the answers he had long been looking for in The Bourne Ultimatum, and once again managed to escape with his life. Although this seemed like the conclusion to his story, Damon will reprise his his role this summer in Jason Bourne, the fifth film in the series (after the Damon-less Bourne Legacy). Naturally, the time gap between the movies brings up this question: what has Bourne been doing since we last saw him?
In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, returning director Paul Greengrass said â[Bourne has] been in the shadows of Europe. Heâs been active and heâs been doing hard physical work. Definitely not sunning himself on the beach.â While Greengrass was light on specific plot points for Jason Bourne, he couldnât stop talking about the shape that Damon was in when he reported for filming.
âIt gave all of us the most immense shock, because you think, âOh my god. This is weird. This is Jason Bourne, and heâs back. Thatâs sort of exciting,â related Greengrass. âYou donât make a movie unless youâre 1000 percent committed to make the best movie we can, and you donât make this kind of movie unless you think it can be a worthy successor to the other movies we made. That phenomenal Jason Bourne shape was a segment of intent.â
Damon is joined in Jason Bourne by returning co-star Julia Stiles as Nicky Parsons in addition to Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed, Ato Essandoh, and Scott Shepherd. The film will be unleashed upon theaters on Friday, July 29.
