Paul Giamatti to Star in Paul Hornschemeier’s Animated Film GIANT SLOTH

It’s no secret that Paul Giamatti loves comic books and animation. He’s portrayed indie comic icon Harvey Pekar in the award-winning film adaptation of Pekar’s work, American Splendor, as well as the villainous Rhino in this summer’s Amazing Spider-Man 2. He’s also voiced the title role in the animated short The Amazing Screw-On Head, based on the comic by Mike Mignola. And now it looks like the Oscar nominee will be lending his voice to another animation project from an acclaimed cartoonist — Paul Hornschemeier’s Giant Sloth. In the last decade, Hornschemeier has received a ton of well-deserved praise for his Dark Horse graphic novel Mother, Come Home and his Fantagraphics collections The Three Paradoxes and All and Sundry. But his animation work for Comedy Bang! Bang! is equally impressive.

According to Hornschemeier, Giant Sloth, which just launched as a Kickstarter project, is “about a curator of an outdated Cultural and Natural History Museum whose life is collapsing. He starts having bizarre hallucinations to try to cope with his career falling part (in the wake of the museum being privatized), his wife leaving him (for a therapist he didn’t even know she was seeing), and all the other upheaval in his previously staid, dusty life.”

The film — for which Hornschemeier will write, direct, produce, and draw all the key art — co-stars the voices of Jason Mantzoukas, Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon, and Robert Popper (co-creator of BBC’s Look Around You). Of course, you can help produce it when you contribute to Giant Sloth‘s campaign, which has reached seventy-six percent of its goal in less than six days. For more, check out its Kickstarter page now. And check out Nerdist in the days ahead for my exclusive interview with Hornschemeier.
