Patton Oswalt Is ‘Putting a Bird on It’ For 2014 Spirit Awards

While certainly Ricky Gervais has ruffled some Hollywood feathers with his roast-y style of awards hosting, the spectacle of an awards show has been largely left to the award winners. Their speeches may go on too long and get too personal or even political and be cut off by a music cue and a cut to commercial. Leave it to the one and only Patton Oswalt to move awards hosting forward by adding some flair on his end at this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards.

This week, Oswalt announced that instead of the typical statue given at The Spirit Awards, he’s taking a play out of the Portlandia playbook and putting a bird on the award, or rather giving a live bird to award winners during the ceremony to be broadcast on IFC, March 1st at 10 pm.

There are no other details as to how all of this is going to be handled or if the ASPCA will be starting a petition about this, but other awards ceremonies need to add some of this pizazz to their proceedings if they want the telecast to be engaging (or at least put a bird on it).
