PaRappa the Rapper Returns In 2017

The Playstation Experience just wrapped up with a couple of big crazy releases that are headed our way in 2017. In addition to finally announcing a sequel for The Last of Us (which hereby becomes as inaccurate a title as The Neverending Story) we got the news that a number of older Playstation IPs are getting remastered and re-released for the Playstation 4.

Among those titles? You betcha: PaRappa The Rapper!

If you don’t remember PaRappa, you’re in for one of gaming’s most delightful franchises. A rapping dog trains his flow under rap masters like Chop Chop Master Onion, Instructor Mooselini, and Cheap Cheap The Cooking Chicken–all in an effort to win the heart of Sunny Funny. The gameplay requires players to synchronize elaborate rhythms to keep RaRappa’s flow going with such classic lines as “Kick, punch, chop, I got the funky flow!”

The ad released alongside the announcement shows how PaRappa love can jump generations, and how PS1 users from 20 years ago can now share this experience alongside their kids. Awwwww.

The remaster includes three games and has been remastered visually in 4k, which seems a little excessive for a game featuring 2D papercraft characters in a flat world. But maybe you don’t see that as overkill? We can all agree that it is very pretty.

Great bonus news: there’s a demo available in the PS Store right now. Just check out the link in Playstation’s tweet.

So what do you think? Is a PaRappa remaster worth getting this excited over, or are you disappointed we aren’t getting a new PaRappa instead? Sound off in the comments.
