Paperwhite’s Lush Dream Pop Will Give You “Wanderlust” (Premiere)

The paperwhite is a daffodil-like plant native to the Mediterranean. Known for its white petals and potent fragrance, the flower is a sign of fertility. Thanks to human intervention, the paperwhite has been naturalized to the United States—namely to Texas, Louisiana, and California—so now you can experience it without leaving the country (ecological consequences notwithstanding). What could once only be found in foreign soil can now also be found at home.

Today Nerdist is premiering a track that embodies a similar duality. Paperwhite, the brother/sister dream pop duo that share a name with the flower, contend that the sensations of dream and discovery are available within as readily as they are while traveling. The band’s new song “Wanderlust”—as well as the entirety of their upcoming EP, Escape—deals with that theme.

“’Wanderlust’ embodies the theme of Escape,” they told Nerdist. “To us, it means so much more than travel and exploration. It’s about having the urge and need to keep dreaming and discovering, whether that’s within yourself or somewhere out there in the unknown.”

According to the new track, Paperwhite’s dreams are cavernous. “Wanderlust” is rich, fragrant, and ripe with potential. Amidst velvety layers of electronics, drummer Ben Marshall (who also drums for New York band, Savoir Adore) plays resonant drum riffs while his sister Katie—the project’s lead singer-songwriter—croons testaments to her own wanderlust.

“I can feel my heart beating / Driven by wanderlust / I just want to wake up dreaming.”

“Wanderlust” is lush as hell. It’ll help satiate your own need for wayfaring—regardless of whether that means going to verdant Mediterranean landscapes or into the silky clouds of your own mind. Give it a try.

Escape arrives on May 10.
