PACIFIC RIM UPRISING Gets a 1975 Japanese Monster Movie Remix

Watching Jaegers and Kaiju rip apart cities as they battle along the Pacific Ocean transports us back to when we were kids. Back to when we used to watch classic Japanese Godzilla movies on Saturday afternoons—the ones with the terrible/amazing English dubbing. Those were some of our favorite films growing up, not in spite of how absurd they were, but because of it. Which is why we wanted to pay tribute to those glorious monster movies by giving Pacific Rim Uprising its very own 1975-style remix.

After previously imagining what Thor: Ragnarok would have looked like in the ’80s, Nerdist Presents pays tribute to Japan for all of those wonderful Godzilla films they have given us over the years with a retro-style version of the upcoming creature feature. But we didn’t just dub in some lines and call it a day; those movies were so much more than that. So to really get that ’70s vibe down we needed a lot of neon, freeze frames, dramatic character introductions, “special effects,” and, of course, people fleeing for their lives through the streets.

If we had stumbled upon this version of Pacific Rim Uprising on basic cable when we were eight, this absolutely would have been our favorite movie ever. Whether its 1975 or 2018, giant monsters are timeless. Just like totally ridiculous dubbing.

Pacific Rim Uprising comes through the breach and into theaters this weekend, March 23.

What should be the next film to get a vintage movie remix from us? Give us your best suggestion in the comments section below.
