PACIFIC RIM 2 Finds an Official Release Date in the Drift

“Today we cancel the apocalypse,” Stacker Pentecost triumphantly proclaimed to the international fighting forces assembled in the Shatterdome in 2013’s Pacific Rim. It would appear that the apocalypse is back on the docket, and so is cancelling it once more because Legendary and Universal Pictures’ Pacific Rim 2 has an official release date, according to Variety.

The follow-up to Guillermo del Toro‘s giant robot vs. giant monster movie will hit theaters on February 23, 2018, which should allow for plenty of time to come up with names that are even sillier than Gipsy Danger, Stacker Pentecost, and Hannibal Chau. This time around Guillermo Del Toro will be producing alongside Thomas Tull and Mary Parent, rather than directing. Taking the director’s chair for his feature film debut is Steven S. DeKnight, whose work you have seen in Netflix’s Daredevil season 1 and on Starz’s Spartacus.

Little is known about the long-awaited sequel, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has joined the cast as the son of Idris Elba’s character, the aforementioned Stacker Pentecost. No word yet on whether we can expect the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, or other stars of the original to return too. Currently, Boyega is filming Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by Rian Johnson, in which he will play the ex-stormtrooper Finn once more. Boyega is also set to star in a remake of Watership Down, as well as an untitled film about the 1967 Detroit Riots by Kathryn Bigelow. So, it’s safe to say that you’ll have no shortage of Boyega to tide you over until he clambers into a Jaeger to battle Kaijus in February 2018.

Are you excited for Pacific Rim 2? Who else would you like to see join the cast? Let us know in the comments below.
