OUTLAST Just Snuck Up on the Xbox One

If you have an Xbox One, drop whatever you’re doing today, close the blinds, turn off the lights, find yourself a pair of surround sound headphones and play Outlast.

Developer Red Barrels’ first-person survival horror game just landed on the platform this morning, according to a post from Major Nelson. If you can’t tell by my my enthusiasm here, it’s a pretty good entry in the genre (even if the last act falls apart with a bunch of noise and backstory).

From the official description:

“In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.”

Your character is only armed with a camera and its night vision function allows him to see enemies lurking the dark. So it’s largely a “run away and hide from things in the night” game as you work your way through the crumbling Mount Massive Asylum, and I’ve heard that it’s one of the better games to show off on the Oculus for the PC set.

The Xbox One release will also include the “Whistleblower” DLC.
