Let’s get a few things straight: Alex Garland’s next movie, Annihilation, already looked and sounded amazing. Because how could it not? A heady sci-fi flick from the Ex Machina director, starring the likes of Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Jennifer Jason Leigh? C’mon: this one had “best movie ever” written all over it. But now this? The announcement that Oscar Isaac is allegedly joining the cast? Well, our brains are about to freakin’ explode. How are we supposed to be productive when this news is out in the world?!
The news comes to us via Tracking Board, who claim that the film will begin production this spring in London. We’ve reached out to Paramount for confirmation but have not heard back by the time of publication. We will update this post as more information becomes available.
The on-screen adaptation of the Jeff VanderMeer novel of the same name will be produced by Scott Rudin and star the aforementioned women. (Garland adapted The Southern Reach Trilogy‘s first novel.) Annihilation will follow an all-female team of investigatorsâan anthropologist, surveyor, biologist (the narrator), and psychologist (the leader)âas they journey into an uninhabited, ominous forest known as Area X, which may not have caused the biologist (Portman)’s husband to disappear. Could that be the role Isaac is playing? Only time (or an official confirmation) will tell!
What do you think of this new development? Are you as excited as we are? Let us know in the comments below!
And if this isn’t enough of an Oscar fix, why not check out Dan’s interview with him for Star Wars?
